45 Years in Wall Street by William Dilbert Gann

William Gann was into his early 70s when he wrote this book.

He writes that he has revealed some of his most valuable rules and secrets that have never been published before. In his world everything follows a pattern.  And because of this he reckons that you can predict just about anything.

He is probably best remembered for his "angles" and numerical sequences.

Traders today still use Gann.  Some wouldn't be without it.  45 Years in Wall Street is Gann's last work and it details his trading rules and techiques.

To silence his critics - he was right 88-90% of the time.

For a more detailed study of Gann's techniques there is a book by Richard Marisch titled:  The W.D. Gann Method of Trading A Simplified Clear Approach.

"The Trading Rules of William Gann"

It must be remembered that Gann, and his contemporaries, didn't have the benefits of modern technology.  All their reearch and study was done long-hand.

Even we remember at school we did charts and such using graph paper and for complex maths we used logarithyms.  We didn't even have calculators in those days.

It was laborious.

Gann must have had a lot of patience.

Here, then, are a few of his rules which you'll find in 45 Years in Wall Street:

1.  Don't trade against the trend

2.  Divide your capital into 10 equal parts and never trade more than 10% on any single trade

3. Use stop loss orders.  Place a sell order 3-5 points below your purchase price

4.  Never, ever, average down by buying more of a losing stock

5.  Never let a profit turn into a loss.  [If you are practicing No. 3 above this won't happen to you]

6.  Run your profits and cut your losses.  [a lot of amateurs do exactly the opposite - they run their losses and cut their profits]

7.  Trade only active stocks.  Stay away from stocks that are slow moving or stationary.

8.  Trade in only four or five stocks.  [Warren Buffett reckons nine or ten]

There were others rules that Gann recommended that aren't in 45 Years in Wall Street.

We find that rules, after a short while, are nothing mor than common sense.  They look to be so obvious.  Why then do most amateur investors break them?

Make your own rules - and stick to them.

45 Years in Wall Street by William Dilbert Gann

This became William Gann's last publication and looks back favourably on a career that would probably be the envy of most.

Gann's techniques were, and still are by some, regarded as questionable.  But those criticisms are mostly from no technicl analysts.  Gann remains popular with followers of the technical approach.

Conclusion

45 Years in Wall Street is the final work of a man who dedicated his whole life to that of stock trading.

His methods and techniques were liked and dis-liked equally depending on whether you were into Technical Analysis or not.

But how can you argue with a man who was right 88-90% of the time?  Gann was that man with such a high success rate.

His techniques are not that difficult to understand.  45 Years in Wall Street is a work that gives you the overview of the man and his techniques.

The W.D. Gann Method of Trading gives the reader a more detailed insight into, not just one aspect of Technical Analysis but Gann's techniques in particular.

Devour those works and get hooked like we did.
